  • [01] Draft law on public health

Ana-Mpa/Greece's national health system (ESY) is in danger of collapse and the measures proposed by the government seek to avert this outcome, Health Minister Mariliza Xenoyiannakopoulou stressed in Parliament on Thursday, during discussion of a health ministry draft bill by a Parliament committee.

"Our goal is to defend ESY's public character, to upgrade and support it and to save funds that until today were going to the private sector," she said.ana-mpa

The bill came under criticism from main opposition New Democracy MPs, however, which dismissed it as a "school essay" and stressed the need to radically reorder and restructure state hospitals. Strong reservations regarding the contents of the bill were also expressed by the right-wing Popular Orthodox Rally (LAOS) party, while the Communist Party of Greece (KKE) and the Coalition of the Radical Left (SYRIZA) said the bill undermined ESY's public character.
