  • [01] Arson attack against Markoyiannakis' office, minor damage caused

    An arson attack against Alternate Interior Minister for Public Order Christos Markoyiannakis' political office in Athens was reported at dawn Thursday.

    Unknown individuals planted a homemade incendiary device, consisting of propane canisters, at the entrance of the Minister's office. The blast at 5:25 a.m. and ensuing fire caused minor material damage.

    [02] Bids for OA unsatisfactory

    Development Minister Costis Hatzidakis said on Wednesday, after the conclusion of the Interministerial Privatisations Committee meeting on the Olympic Airways company, that the bids given for Olympic were not sastisfactory in relation to demands, adding that the efforts are being continued on a new basis and calling on the big business groups to show interest.

    The minister also said that "the invitation to candidate investors is open, explicit and clear," while stating previously that "the government's steadfast goal is the privatisation of Olympic Airways and this is so, because it is the only way to handle a longstanding problem."

    [03] ASE opening: Big decline

    Equity prices were declining at the opening of trade on Thursday on the Athens Stock Exchange (ASE), with the basic share price index down 1.32 percent, standing at 1,721.03 points at 10:45 a.m., and turnover at 9.2 million euros.

    Individual sector indices were moving mostly downward, with the biggest losses in Banks, down 2.11 percent; Oil & Gas, down 1.75 percent; and Telecoms, down 1.69 percent.

    The biggest gains were in Insurance, up 2.55 percent; Technology, up 1.01 percent; and Food & Beverage, up 0.54 percent.

    The FTSE/ASE 20 index for blue chip and heavily traded stocks was down 1.68 percent, the FTSE/ASE MID 40 index was down 0.54 percent, and the FTSE/ASE-80 small cap index was up 0.11 percent.

    Of the stocks moved, 21 were up, 36 were down, and 15 were unchanged.
