  • [01] Karamanlis focuses on quality-of-life upgrades for greater Athens area

Prime Minister Costas Karamanlis on Friday toured a one-time army camp in the west Athens municipality of Haidari that will be turned into a 17-hectare park for the industry-laden district, continuing his busy itinerary of visits and appearances ahead of the Sept. 16 election.

"We are proceeding together with action, and reforms that will improve the present and guarantee the future for all," Karamanlis said.

While there, the prime minister said the former military base will serve as the biggest park in west Athens, which hosts several of the greater Athens area's most congested districts.

"With the transfer of military bases and the decentralization of other state services in tandem with the exploitation of Olympic facilities, Attica prefecture is changing, acquiring infrastructure and improving residents' quality of living," the premier said

[02] Papariga: Vote against ND, PASOK

Communist Party of Greece (KKE) general secretary Aleka Papariga on Friday reiterated her party's leitmotif of condemning the country's two major parties, ruling New Democracy and main opposition PASOK, in the coming Sept. 16 election.

Papariga's latest statements came during a visit to the national statistical service's headquarters in Athens, where she also downplayed concerns that a marginal Parliament majority for the first party will mean a weak government.

Among others, she also forecast dire consequences for the country's social security system, while saying that a vote for her communist party means to struggle against pending privatisation of your company instead of "struggling after privatisation" - a reference to an array of various state-controlled enterprises in Greece's cavernous extended public sector.

    [03] Alavanos tours Lefkada, Epirus

Coalition of the Left (Synaspismos) leader Alekos Alavanos on Friday continued his tour of the northwest Epirus region, where he extended his condolences to the families of the six victims of same-day wildfires in the southern Peloponnese.

Alavanos, who leads the "radical left coalition (Syriza)" in the upcoming Sept. 16 election, made the statement from the northwestern coastal town of Preveza.

"We're heading into the elections with a heavy heart, and we are devastated from the news in Messinia (extreme SW Greece) prefecture," he said.

Alavanos toured a hospital in Preveza after arriving from the nearby Ionian island of Lefkada, which he toured earlier in the morning. While there he mostly focused on the social security issue, and his leftist formation's views on the subject.
