[01] 4 dead as wildfires ravage S. Peloponnese
A trio of massive wildfires, extending from the central Peloponnese
down to Laconia prefecture in the extreme south, claimed the lives of
at least two forest fire-fighters and a couple on Friday, with another
fireman missing, authorities said.
The worst of the three fires, on the slopes of Mt. Taygetus, raging
east to west towards the plain of Kalamata (and not Sparta as reported
previously), caused the evacuation of a handful of villages and a
children's summer camp in the area.
Another blaze was ravaging Mt. Parnona, whereas another wildfire in the
Megalopoli district, near the central Peloponnese city of Tripolis,
also caused the evacuation of several villages.
The dead fire-fighters were reportedly battling a blaze near Areopolis,
in extreme southern Greece.
According to reports, land lines and mobile phones are down throughout
Laconia prefecture.
