  • [01] Stephanis new president of Academy of Athens

    The official appointment of the new president of the Academy of Athens, Constantine Stephanis, and of the Academy's vice-president, Panagiotis Vokotopoulos, was held at an event on Thursday evening.

    Present at the event, held at the audience-packed premises of the Academy, were academics, representatives of the government, Parliament and of the political parties, as well as former prime minister Costas Simitis.

    Stephanis took over the post from the Academy's outgoing president Manolis Roukounas.

    Stephanis, who served as Minister of Health and Welfare in 2002 to 2004 and as Minister of State (1996-2000), graduated from Athens University's Medical School in 1953, before becoming a Research Fellow in Neuroscience at McGill University (Montreal), Research Scientist at the National Foundation for Mental Health in the US, and the Saint Elizabeth federal psychiatriac hospital in (Bethesda MD and Washington DC).

    He as been a member of the Academy of Athens since 1994, serving as vice-president of the Academy in 2005. He is also the director and president of the Aceademy's Research Institute for Mental Health since 1990, and vice-president of the Academy's Medical and Biological Research Foundation since 1994. He also served as president of the National Committee on Mental health in 2001.

    International positions include president of the World Psychiatric Association (WPA) and life-long member emeritus of the WPA Council, and president of the WPA's Ethics Committee (1977-93); director of the World Health Organisation's (WHO) cooperative centre for research and education in mental health since 1973; President of the International Association for the Prevention and Cure of Depression (PTD) since 1993; President of the WPA-PTD's international training programme on depression since 1993; and member emeritus of 12 international psychiatric societies and Academies.

    Stephanis is also the author of numerous international books and more than 300 treatises published in the international professional media.
