    BRUSSELS (ANA/M Aronis) - The European Union's executive Commission on Thursday awarded Greece and Cyprus a grant of 1.4 million euros for pototao production as part of a 25.5 million euro package in 14 member states to provide information and promote agricultural products in the bloc.

    Earmarked for the two countries are a total of 2.9 million euros under the EU programme of â¬50.9 million, of which the EU will contribute half, the Commission said in a statement.

    Selected were 25 programmes in Belgium, Germany, Greece and Cyprus, Spain, France, Italy, Hungary, Austria, the Netherlands, Poland, Sweden, Finland and the United Kingdom as eligible for financing. They cover organic products, agricultural quality products, oils, milk, cheese, meat, wine, fruit and vegetables, flowers and potatoes.

    The approved programmes are the second series for the year 2005, A first series was approved in June 2005. The EU budget available in 2005 for promotion programmes for agricultural products in the European Union was â¬48.5 million.

    The publicity measures aim to highlight the advantages of EU products, especially quality, hygiene, food safety, nutrition, labelling, animal welfare or environment-friendliness.

    The measures can also cover participation at events and fairs, information campaigns on the EU system of protected designations of origin (PDO), protected geographical indications (PGI) and traditional speciality guaranteed (TSG), information on EU quality and labelling systems and organic farming,

    Information campaigns on the EU system of quality wines produced in specified regions (QWPSR) are also amongst the possibilities.

    The remaining half of the cost of programmes will be met by the trade groups that which proposed them, and/or by the governments concerned.

    [02] Art exhibit/auction for children's charity at Metro

    An art exhibition and auction of works by contemporary Greek artists will be staged at the Athens Metro's Syntagma Square station on Thursday, January 19, the proceeds of which will go to the Kivotos tou Kosmou foundation for children.

    The non-profit organisation "Kivotos tou Kosmou" (Ark of the World), which runs a youth centre providing a safe and secure home-away-from-home for Greek, migrant and refugee children of broken or impoverished families, with the support of the Attiko Metro Operating Company (AMEL S.A.), will be staging the all-day exhibition at the Syntagma station, followed by an auction at 7:30 p.m. the same day.

    More than 50 contemporary Greek artists (or their families) have donated the works for the auction -- including Dimitris Mytaras, Alekos Fassianos, George Lazongas and Dimitris Milionis -- the proceeds of which will be donated for the Kivotos' philanthropic mission.

    Works by Nikos Eggonopoulos have also been donated to the auction by the artist's family.

    Also on display and up for auction will be works donated by the AMEL artistic team on the theme "The Child", while all other participants -- auctioneer, event coordinators, public relations team, event presenter and entertainment -- have generously donated their assistance and expertise.

    Other objects of art and artistic gifts have been donated by GKart.

    Works of the following artists will be on display and up for auction: Paschalis Angelidis, Rebecca Alexopoulou, Maria Antonatou, Yannis Antonopoulos, Yannis Valavanidis, Mina Papatheodorou-Valiraki, Margarita Vassilakou, Frederic Bootz, Apostolos Yiayiannos, Voula Gounela, Panayotis Gravvalos, Dimosthenes Davettas, Eleni Delli, Monachos Ermolaos, Costas Evangelatos, Petros Zoumboulakis, Opy Zouni, Irini Iliopoulou, Marigo Kassi, Aristomenis Katsoulas, Nikolas Klironomos, Haris Kontosfyris, Apostolos Lavdas, Grigoris Lagos, Kyriakos Lazaridis, George Lazongas, George Lyntzeris, Pares Mallis, Alexandra Maniati, Dimitris Milionis, Dimitris Mytaras, Aristidis Patsoglou, George Pirounias, George Rorris, Eduardos Sakayian, Christos Sarakatsianos, George Skyloyannis, Sotiris Sorohgas, Yannis Stefanakis, Amalia Sotiropoulou, Vangelis Tzermias, Costis Triantafyllou, Anna-Maria Tsakali, Emilia Tsekoura, Aristomenis Tsolakis, Alekos Fassianos, Philippos Fexis, Maria Philopoulou, and Eleni Hourmouzi. From the AMEL artistic group, works have been donated by Frieda Georgiou, Panayotis Giannelis, Irini Campa-Maltezopoulou, Dimitris Kasampalis, Eleni Athanasopoulou-Cosmidou, Aphrodite Kouvara, Vassilis Krelios, Nikos Bouganis, Christos Skouras, Efthymios Spais, and Christos Tsotas.

    Petros Vergos will act as auctioneer, while the event will be presented by Annita Nathanail, with the musical introduction performed by the famed Dimitris Typaldos Children's Choir. Coordinator of the event is Maria Panagidou of artproductions, with public relations by Nantia Gregou and Katerina Terzopoulou.

    Pictured is a painting by artist Dimitris Milionis, one of the contributors to the exhition/auction for the Kivotos tou Kosmou foundation, whose latest individual exhibition ends Saturday at the Monohoro art gallery in the Athens suburb of Neo Psychico.
