  • [01] Eirinaios elected to be new Jerusalem Patriarch

    JERUSALEM (ANA) Ierapolis Metropolitan Eirinaios was elected as the new Orthodox Patriarch of Jerusalem on Monday, replacing Patriarch Diodorus who died eight months ago.

    Eirinaos had served as Exarch of theHoly Sepulchre in Athens for several years prior to his election.

    [02] Gatsioudis wins bronze for javelin at World Championships

    EDMONTON (ANA) Greek athlete Costas Gatsioudis won the bronze medal in the men's javelin competition at the World Athletics Championships here in Canada on Monday, with a throw of 89.95 metres.

    With this medal, Gatsioudis becomes the first Greek to win three medals in world championship competitions, having won a bronze medal in Athens and a silver medal in Seville

    [03] Athens Medical Centre says operation on Fatos Nano was a success

    Doctors who operated on Albania's Socialist Party leader Fatos Nano at the Athens Medical Centre pronounced the operation a success on Monday and said he would be released the following day.

    Nano was injured in two digits of his right hand during a car accident in Tepelene, Albania on Saturday night and rushed to Athens for emergency surgery on Sunday.

    [04] Athens Stock Exchange opening: losses

    Equities were slipping at the opening of trade Monday on the Athens Stock Exchange, with the general index down 0.71 percent at 2,605.52 points and turnover at 2.1 million euro.

    Individual sector indices were mostly moving down, except for retail trade which was up 0.38 percent. The biggest losses were for the infotech index, down 1.90 per cent.

    The FTSE/ASE 20 index for blue chip and heavily traded stocks was down 0.79 percent, the FTSE/ASE MID 40 index was down 0.44 percent, and the FTSE/ASE SMALLCAP index was down 0.35 percent.

    Of the stocks moved, 52 were up, 107 were down and 217 were unchanged.

    [05] Weather Forecast: Overcast, possible showers, on Monday

    Unsettled weather with possible showers or storms is forecast for northeast Greece and the northern Aegean on Monday, while sunshine in the rest of the country will give way to cloud and brief showers in the afternoon. Winds northerly, moderate to strong and very strong in the Aegean. In the west and the north, temperatures will range from 20C to 32C; on the rest of the mainland from 22C to 35C; and in the Aegean islands from 24C to 33C. Cloud and rain in Athens with temperatures between 24C and 34C. Same in Thessaloniki, with strong to very strong north northwest winds and temperatures from 22C to 32C.
