[02] Man dies because of protest at municipality merger12/08/2001 18:13:08A man from Crete died in hospital on Sunday as a result of burns sustained while trying to restrain another from self-immolating over the merger of his village municipality. Emmanuel Lasithiotakis, 55, father of two, was injured during an incident in the village of Vrahasi on July 3, when local inhabitants turned out to protest against the administrative union of their village and that of Neapolis. The protestors had attacked a convoy of garbage trucks from Neapolis that arrived with a police escort to collect the village's rubbish. During the melee, 75-year-old Costas Platakis had doused himself with alcohol and set fire to himself. Rushing to Platakis' aid, Lasithiotakis was himself seriously burned and had been hospitalised since that time. A funeral for Lasithiotakis was held at 5:00 p.m. [03] Fatos Nano in Athens hospital for surgery following accident12/08/2001 16:46:29Albania's Socialist Party leader Fatos Nano was admitted to an Athens hospital for emergency surgery on Sunday after being injured in a traffic accident in Tepelene, Albania. According to an announcement by his doctors on Sunday afternoon, Nano is expected to make a full recovery and will most likely be released from hospital in two days time. Nano underwent plastic micro-surgery at the Athens Medical Centre on the fingers of his right hand, carried out by a hospital team specialising in hand surgery. [04] Fillipoi fire and another 127 blazes in Greece under control12/08/2001 16:21:26A wildfire that broke out in the Fillipoi municipality in Kavala was now under partial control, the fire department announced on Sunday morning. Two fire-fighting aircraft, two helicopters and ground crews had been sent out to battle the blaze. The fire department said that all 127 fires reported throughout the country from Saturday to Sunday morning were in farmland or forest and all were under control. [05] Police suspect murder in case of hanged Turkish clinic patient12/08/2001 15:27:14A Turkish man found hanged from the balcony of a Haidari clinic may well have been murdered, a police coroner said on Sunday. Ibrahim Dokan, 28, was found early on Saturday morning and had been hanged with a three-metre electrical cord taken from a freezer in the clinic's basement, while his hands were tied behind his back with white bandages.
