    12/08/2001 18:13:08

A man from Crete died in hospital on Sunday as a result of burns sustained while trying to restrain another from self-immolating over the merger of his village municipality.

Emmanuel Lasithiotakis, 55, father of two, was injured during an incident in the village of Vrahasi on July 3, when local inhabitants turned out to protest against the administrative union of their village and that of Neapolis.

The protestors had attacked a convoy of garbage trucks from Neapolis that arrived with a police escort to collect the village's rubbish. During the melee, 75-year-old Costas Platakis had doused himself with alcohol and set fire to himself. Rushing to Platakis' aid, Lasithiotakis was himself seriously burned and had been hospitalised since that time.
