[01] EU-US Summit in Slovenia to discuss further strengthening of strategic
partnership
This year’s EU-US Summit will take place in Brdo, Slovenia on Tuesday 10
June. The Summit will cover the full gamut of global and regional issues
where the EU and the US seek to act in partnership. Issues for discussion
will include assisting the development of Kosovo, following up on the
Middle East peace initiative launched last year at Annapolis, shaping a
comprehensive and binding post-2012 global agreement on tackling climate
change, and working together to promote energy efficiency as well as energy
security through the diversification of supply sources and the development
of sustainable new forms of energy. Furthermore the EU and the US will
discuss the strengthening of the economic and regulatory cooperation and
the deburdening of enterprises on both sides of the Atlantic, following the
cooperation in this field in the framework of the Transatlantic Economic
Council (TEC). The EU will also be asking the US for an update on progress
towards its commitment to bring further EU Member States into the US Visa
Waiver Programme.
[03] Maritime policy: Commissioner Borg in Slovenia to promote closer
cooperation on maritime issues in the Mediterranean
Joe Borg, EU Commissioner for Maritime Affairs and Fisheries, will attend
tomorrow an international conference in Portorož, Slovenia, to open a
debate on the maritime-related challenges and opportunities for the
Mediterranean Sea basin. The discussions will focus on cooperation and
governance in a variety of maritime sectors and activities such as
environment, sea transport, surveillance and research. Closer cooperation
in these areas between EU and non-EU countries in the region, as well as
increased collaboration between sectoral players, will be the leitmotivs.
The conference, organised by the Slovenian Presidency of the EU, the
European Commission and the University Centre for Euro-Mediterranean
Studies in Piran, will be an important step towards applying the EU's
Integrated Maritime Policy in the regional context.
[04] An EU27 surplus in trade in goods with the USA of more than € 80
billion in 2007
Taking goods and services together, the EU and the USA account for the
largest bilateral trade relationship in the world. The significant amount
of bilateral trade and investment illustrates a high degree of
interdependence of the two economies. On the occasion of the European Union
- USA summit, which will take place on Tuesday 10 June in Brdo in Slovenia,
Eurostat issues data on trade and investments between the USA and the EU.
[05] Commissioner Kovács to participate in customs actions taking place in
the Netherlands, Germany and Hungary
This week, Commissioner Kovács will visit customs at the port of Rotterdam
(9 June), Frankfurt airport (11 June) and at Röszke (12 June), which is
the land border between Hungary and Serbia. Commissioner Kovács and the
customs authorities will illustrate to journalists how customs cooperate
across the EU, how quickly information is exchanged on the possible arrival
of risky consignments and what tools are used to detect them. The visits
will show practical examples of how customs protect European citizens in
their daily lives against all kind of illegal or dangerous imports. The
Customs Action Week is part of the celebrations to mark the 40th
anniversary of the EU Customs Union. An audiovisual news package will be
available on Friday, 13 June via EbS. Further information on customs roles
