The report covers topics from heart disease, mental health, cancers, diabetes, oral health, musculoskeletal conditions, reproductive health and life expectancy. The report highlights recent trends, economic and social impacts and current gaps in information. All 13 chapters are written by leading experts in the field. The report is an outcome of different projects co-funded under the Commission's Public Health Programme. It represents the views and findings of the authors and does not necessarily reflect the position of the European Commission. Several chapters on mental health including autism, dementia and depression emphasise the importance of early diagnosis and identification of risk factors. The impact of depression on disability and quality of life is similar if not stronger than that of physical disorders. In a study of 6 EU countries, between 9.9% and 20% of the adult population, depending on the country, reported a history of depression at some point in their lives. Mental health will be the focus of a major EU conference on 13 June 2008.
