[01] North Korea: Commission earmarks € 2 million emergency response to
flood victims
The European Commission is preparing a new emergency humanitarian decision
of €2 million to help the estimated 500,000 people directly affected by
the record high torrential rains that struck the Democratic People's
Republic of Korea in the past weeks. The funds will be used to meet the
basic needs of those directly suffering from the destruction caused by the
severe floods, over a period of 6 months. All funds are channelled through
the Commission’s Humanitarian Aid department (ECHO), under the
responsibility of Commissioner Louis Michel and will be allocated to
implementing international humanitarian organisations.
[02] Mergers: Commission clears proposed acquisition of Solectron by
Flextronics
The European Commission has approved, under the EU Merger Regulation, the
proposed acquisition of Solectron Corporation ("Solectron", USA) by
Flextronics International Ltd. ("Flextronics", Singapore). Both companies
are providers of electronics manufacturing services at a global level.
After examining the operation carefully, the Commission concluded that the
transaction would not significantly impede effective competition in the EEA
or any substantial part of it
[03] Commission clears acquisition of TMI by Rhenus
The European Commission has granted clearance under the EU Merger
Regulation to the acquisition of sole control of B.V. Transport Management
International Holding (‘TMI’, the Netherlands) by Rhenus AG & Co. KG
(‘Rhenus’, Germany), belonging to the Rethmann group (‘Rethmann’,
Germany). Rhenus is active in the logistic and transport services. Rethmann
deals with water and recycling management, transport and logistic services,
disposal and recycling of animal bodies and food left-overs. TMI is present
in the road-, air- and sea forwarding, air cargo handling and warehousing.
The operation was examined under the simplified merger review procedure.
