MIDDAY EXPRESSNews from the Communication Directorate General's midday briefingNouvelles du rendez-vous de midi de la Direction Générale Communicationb28/08/07[01] European Forest Fire Information System: latest figures for forest fires in GreeceAccording to the European Commission's European Forest Fire Information System (EFFIS), 183 987 hectares were burnt in Greece between 24 and 26 August, during the major forest fires that have ravaged that country. This brings the provisional figure to this point in the 2007 forest fire season in Greece to 268 834 hectares. The concentration of damage in the Peloponnese coincides with the fire danger maps produced by EFFIS Fire Danger system that shows the Peloponnese as being the area of Greece with highest meteorological fire risk. However, the forecasts for the coming days show that the fire risk in Greece in general and the Peloponnese in particular will reduce.This information comes from the EFFIS Rapid Damage Assessment and Fire Danger Systems and Fire Weather Index, managed by the European Commission's in-house scientific service, the Joint Research Centre. http://effis.jrc.it Satellite pictures depicting the fire damage and graphs with fire forecasts up to 30 August are available from <a href="mailto:Antonia.Mochan@ec.europa.eu">Antonia.Mochan@ec.europa.eu [02] Greek fires: further offers of suportDuring the course of yesterday, there have been several further offers of support to help Greece fight the forest-fire emergency.Greece has accepted an offer from Spain to provide 2 more Canadairs, bringing the overall total being provided from Europe to 10 Canadairs. Of these, 7 (from France, Italy and Spain) have been deployed since the weekend; and 1 from Portugal arrived yesterday. In addition, Austria has offered 3 Platus Porter DC aircraft. As regards helicopters, Sweden has offered a further two helicopters. In addition, the Czech Republic has offered a Bell 412, Finland has offered 3 helicopters and Romania a type MI- 17. These would be in addition to the 10 helicopters already accepted and which continue to arrive. Cyprus has provided 6 fire-fighting engines and 60 forest fire-fighters. Poland has offered 30 fire fighters and 50 hoses. Finland has also offered to provide a platoon of fire-fighters and Sweden has offered fire-fighting equipment. This brings the total number of members of the Community Mechanism for Civil Protection making offers of assistance to date to 15.
