[01] Eurobarometer : Are Europe's children too confident in tackling online
risks?
Can parents trust their 13 year old daughter when she surfs the web? Do
they know for sure that their 11 year old son's mobile phone conversation
is safe? A Commission survey of children from all over Europe has looked
into how they use new media. It shows that the use of internet and mobile
phones has become almost self-evident for Europe's young generation. In
general, they also know the risks of using the internet and mobile phones.
However, when facing trouble online, minors will ask an adult only as a
last resort.
cause.
[03] Commission approves proposed acquisition of Lanxess by the INEOS Group
The European Commission has cleared under the EU Merger Regulation the
proposed acquisition of the thermoplastic engineering business ("The
Business") of the German company Lanxess by INEOS, a UK based group
involved in intermediate and speciality chemicals. The Commission concluded
that the transaction would not significantly impede effective competition
in the EEA or any substantial part of it.
[04] Commission clears acquisition of DRH by RREEF and Monterey
The European Commission has granted clearance under the EU Merger
Regulation to the acquisition of joint control of Deutsche Raststätten
Holding (DRH) of Germany by the fund RREEF Two Lux (Luxembourg), ultimately
managed by Deutsche Bank, and Monterey Capital IV S.Ã .r.l. (Monterey) of
Luxembourg. Deutsche Bank is active in banking, financial and related
services worldwide. Monterey is a private equity investor, active
worldwide. DRH runs and leases motorway service stations in Germany. The
operation was examined under the simplified merger review procedure.
[05] World Water Week : reviewing water use in a changing world
The 2007 edition of World Water Week taking place from 12 to 18 August in
Stockholm will focus on the sustainable use of water resources in a rapidly
changing world plagued by the effects of climate change. This event has
been held annually since 1991 and is an important arena for members of the
private and public sectors and of civil society to discuss how water
resources are used around the world and what actions are required to
resolve such challenges. During the conference the EU will present its
research achievements in the field of Integrated Water Resources
Management. The European Research Framework Programme funds research in
water management for the developing world. The EU has spent over €130
million under the Sixth Framework Programme for Research (2002-2006) on
Integrated Water Research Management projects focusing on the developing
world. Many of these projects twin organisations from European river basins
with those from Africa, the Mediterranean, Latin America, and Asia. By
sharing scientific knowledge and best practices in management of river
basins, effective measures are promoted to alleviate poverty. For the
European Union, the aim is to move towards a water-efficient and water-
saving economy. In July 2007, the Commission raised a number of issues to
be taken into account. At the heart of these policy options is the need to
reduce the amount of water used in Europe and to better manage water
resources available on the continent. As climate change could deteriorate
the already worrying water situation in Europe, the Commission made policy
proposals in January 2007 designed to combat the further development of
climate change and recently presented policy options for adapting to
climate change. More information available at: <a href="http://www.worldwaterweek.org/">http://www.worldwaterweek.org/
