With the European Strategy to promote gender equality in development cooperation adopted today, the European Commission translates into practice the EU commitment to put gender equality at the heart of its development policy. The strategy suggests concrete actions in five key areas for the promotion of gender equality: governance, employment, education, health and domestic violence. La conférence a lieu aujourd'hui de 12h30 à 14h30 à Bruxelles.[04] Women's careers and ICT : an untapped potentialThe proportion of women graduates in information and communications technology (ICT) in Europe is falling, especially compared to other regions of the world. To promote women's careers in ICT, the European Commission presents today, on International Women's Day, the video diaries of six young women who were given the chance to accompany a successful female engineer or technologist for a day. These show the promising career prospects that are possible for women in ICT.[05] Commission clears acquisition of Sdu by ABN AMRO and AllianzThe European Commission has granted clearance under the EU Merger Regulation to the acquisition of joint control of Sdu N.V. (Sdu) of The Netherlands by ABN AMRO Capital BO Funds B.V. (AAC) of The Netherlands, belonging to the ABN AMRO Group, and Allianz Capital Partners GmbH (ACP) controlled by the Allianz Group of Germany. AAC is a private equity company. ACP is active in financial investments. Sdu, currently wholly owned by the Dutch State, is mainly active in publishing legal information for professional users and organising related courses, seminars and conferences. This initiative follows the spate of cross-border natural disasters (forest fires, earthquakes and floods) which have affected Europe in recent years. Germany will manage two projects: one with Poland to develop a module for flood management and another with the Netherlands in the field of urban search and rescue. Latvia will set up a module with Lithuania to fight cross border floods. France will create a module with Italy, Spain and Portugal but also associating Cyprus, Greece, Hungary, Malta, Slovakia and the Czech Republic, to fight forest fires. Italy will develop a mobile assessment and command unit specialised in earthquakes with Portugal and Germany and the UK will create a maritime research and rescue module to deal with coastal floods together with Ireland and Sweden. The aim of these projects is also to raise awareness of the need to cooperate between Member States in the field of civil protection. Natural disasters are recurrent in Europe. They sometimes claim human lives and always entail significant costs in terms of damage to the social and physical infrastructure, to the environment and the economy. Action needs to be taken at European level to enhance preparedness and response and mitigate losses. For more information - <a href="http://ec.europa.eu/environment/civil/prote/crossborder.htm">http://ec.europa.eu/environment/civil/prote/crossborder.htm [08] Commission seeks opinions from EFSA and European Group of Ethics on cloningThe European Commission has referred the issue of cloned animals and their offspring to the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) and the European Group of Ethics for their Opinions. EFSA has been asked to assess the possible implications of cloning for food safety, animal health, animal welfare and environment in the EU. Animal cloning is a new breeding technique, which is currently used almost exclusively for research purposes in the EU. However, it appears likely to develop and expand both in the EU and internationally in the future. The Commission is therefore seeking the independent, scientific opinion of EFSA before deciding how any food and products from cloned animals and their offspring should be dealt with. EFSA is expected to deliver its Opinion on this issue within six months. The Commission has also asked the European Group of Ethics to update its Opinion on the ethical aspects of cloning techniques. The Group of Ethics will consider the implications of cloning farm animals, taking into account the potential health risks for cloned animals. Consideration will also be given to potential interference with biodiversity. The Opinions of EFSA and the Ethics Group, along with extensive consultations with Member States, stakeholders and consumers, will help in determining any future EU measures for cloned animals and their products. The existing opinion of the European Group of Ethics can be found on the web site at:<a href="http://ec.europa.eu/european_group_ethics/docs/opinion9_en.pdf">http://ec.europa.eu/european_group_ethics/docs/opinion9_en.pdf [09] Commission supplies foot-and-mouth vaccine to TurkeyA consignment of 1, 500,000 doses of trivalent vaccine against foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) supplied by the European Commission to Turkey will arrive tomorrow, as a contribution towards the spring vaccination campaign against this disease in Turkish Thrace and adjacent areas. Foot-and-mouth disease is still endemic in large parts of Turkey, and already two outbreaks have been reported in 2007, in areas close to the border with Greece and Bulgaria. Where complete culling of infected herds is not carried out, vaccination is the only disease control measure which can protect animals against infection from the foot-and-mouth disease virus. It is also essential in minimising the spread of the virus. The vaccines being sent by the EU are due to arrive in Turkey tomorrow, and vaccination will begin immediately. The vaccination campaign will be monitored by the FAO-based European Commission for the Control of FMD (EUFMD) and the Commission will continue to assist Turkey in its efforts to eradicate this disease.
