  • [01] Commissioner Potočnik on first official visit to Turkey

    European Science and Research Commissioner, Janez Potočnik, will make his first official visit to Turkey on 6-8 September 2006. He will address a conference on European Technology Platforms in Ankara on 7 September, visit the Gebze Marmara Research Centre, and meet with representatives of the Turkish business and science and research community in Istanbul on 8 September. He will also meet with Turkish Deputy Prime Minister Abdullatif Şener. The main themes of the visit will be Turkish participation in current and future research framework programmes, and the development of national policies that support research.

    [02] Climate change: Commission takes awareness-raising campaign into schools

    As the new school year begins, the European Commission is making available a specially developed range of information tools and materials on climate change for use by teachers and students across the EU. Schoolchildren are also being invited to make a personal pledge to combat climate change. The schools programme marks a new phase in the Commission's "You control climate change" public awareness campaign launched in May. It will be supported by TV, press and internet advertising.

    [03] EU deploys Election Observation Mission to Zambia

    The European Commission is deploying an EU Election Observation Mission (EOM) for the Presidential and Parliamentary elections in Zambia scheduled to take place on 28 September 2006. The EU EOM will be led by Annemie Neyts- Uyttebroeck, Belgium Member of the European Parliament. The EOM is a further contribution by the European Commission to supporting democracy in Zambia.

    [04] Presidency meets the press with Finnish Prime Minister Matti Vanhanen

    Wednesday 6th September 1210 (GMT)

    A new TV initiative of the Finnish presidency and the European Commission: for more transparency in European affairs.

    Leading Brussels journalists will put questions on the current EU Presidency to Finnish premier Matti Vanhanen LIVE on Europe by Satellite (EbS) tomorrow at 12.10 (GMT).

    The TV debate will centre on European issues topping this week's news agenda, mainly EU- ASEM 6 summit. It will link the YLE studios in Helsinki and those at the European Commission HQ in Brussels operated by the Commission's Audiovisual services.

    The show will be followed by three more, one each month, until the end of the Finnish Presidency. This joint initiative by the Finnish Presidency and Commission Vice-President Margot Wallström underlines their joint commitment to more transparency in European affairs.
