The European Commission has sent 1 660 500 doses of bivalent vaccine
against foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) to Turkey, as a contribution towards
the autumn vaccination campaign against this disease. Foot-and-mouth
disease is currently endemic in Turkey, with the latest outbreak occurring
in a village near Istanbul and notified to the OIE in early July. In
addition to disease eradication measures, such as the culling of infected
herds, vaccination is considered to be an essential component in protecting
animals from foot-and-mouth disease and preventing the spread of the virus.
The vaccines being sent by the EU are due to arrive in Turkey today, and
vaccination will begin immediately. The vaccination campaign will be
monitored by the FAO based European Commission for the Control of FMD
(EUFMD) and the Commission will continue to assist Turkey in its efforts to
eradicate this disease.
