[01] Danuta Hübner: "European Regional Policy will continue to support the
Baltic Sea Region"
Regional Policy Commissioner Danuta Hübner today attends the conference
"Prosperity and Sustainability" in Visby, Sweden, to deliver a key note
speech on "Strengthening co-operation in the Baltic Sea region".
Commissioner Hübner will meet the Swedish Prime Minister Göran Persson,
the Prime Minister of Finland, Matti Vanhanen, and the Prime Minister of
Lithuania, Gediminas Kirkilas. Organised by the Swedish Government, the
conference brings together about 250 high representatives from national and
regional administrations, international institutions, and civil society and
business organisations in order to discuss issues of common concern as
regards the sustainable economic, social and environmental development of
the Baltic Sea Region.
[02] Lebanon/Environment: International co-ordination efforts to contain
oil spill in Lebanon are under way
After the cessation of hostilities international organisations are
beginning to co-ordinate their assistance to Lebanon to fight against the
oil-spill. International organisations involved in the response to marine
pollution emergencies are meeting on 17 August in Athens in order to agree
on an action plan aiming at co-ordinating follow up actions to those
carried out by the European Commission in the framework of the monitoring
and information Centre (MIC) on civil protection in Lebanon.
[03] Industrial production down by 0.1% in euro area - Stable in EU25
Seasonally adjusted industrial production declined by 0.1% in the euro area
in June 2006 compared to May 2006. Production rose by 1.8% in May3 and fell
by 0.7% in April. Output in the EU25 remained unchanged in June 2006, after
an increase of 1.3% in May and a decrease of 0.2% in April. In June 2006
compared to June 2005, industrial production rose by 4.3% in the euro area
and by 4.0% in the EU25. These estimates are released by Eurostat.
[04] Euro area annual inflation down to 2.4% - EU25 unchanged at 2.4%
Euro area annual inflation was 2.4% in July 2006, down from 2.5% in June. A
year earlier the rate was 2.2%. Monthly inflation was -0.1% in July 2006.
EU25 annual inflation was 2.4% in July 2006, unchanged compared to June. A
year earlier the rate was 2.1%. Monthly inflation was -0.1% in July 2006.
EICP annual inflation was 2.4% in July 2006.

[05] Commission clears acquisition of Centro Energia by Endesa and Foster
The European Commission has granted clearance under the EU Merger
Regulation to the acquisition of joint control of Centro Energia Ferrara
S.p.A. (‘CEF’, Italy) and Centro Energia Teverola S.p.A. (‘CET’,
Italy) by Endesa Europa S.L. (‘Endesa’, Spain) and Foster Wheeler
Italiana S.p.A. (‘FWI’, Italy). Endesa deals with production and
commercialisation of energy. FWI activities concern engineering,
construction and power generation equipment. CEF and CET are both active in
the electricity generation.
