[01] Commission to recover € 161.9 million of CAP expenditure from the
Member States
A total of € 161.9 million of EU farm money unduly spent by Member States
is to be claimed back, following a decision adopted today by the European
Commission. The money will be recovered because of inadequate control
procedures or non-compliance with EU rules on agricultural expenditure.
Member States are responsible for paying out and checking expenditure under
the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP), and the Commission is required to
ensure that Member States have made correct use of the funds.
[02] Joe Borg participates in Maritime event in Brittany
European Commissioner for Fisheries and Maritime Affairs, Joe Borg,
participated earlier today in the inauguration of the 20th edition of the
"Maritime Festival" ("Fêtes maritimes") which takes place in the port of
Douarnenez (Brittany). This year's edition focuses on the action of
rescuers at sea to which it pays a well deserved tribute. In his speech,
Commissioner Borg presented the Green Paper, adopted on 7 June, on a future
European maritime policy for the European Union. Such a policy aims at
increasing growth and competitiveness whilst simultaneously preserving the
resource base: the marine environment. Speaking specifically about maritime
heritage which is another central theme of the "Maritime Festival",
Commissioner Borg said that "the Green Paper places emphasis on the
maintenance and development of Europe's maritime heritage – the cultural,
educational and recreational aspects of our common history of Europe's seas
and oceans. I believe that such an approach can help to highlight the
importance of maritime activities and to encourage people to choose a
career in the maritime sectors". After watching demonstrations of sea-
rescue exercises, Commissioner Borg will visit the tugboat "Abeille
Bourbon". The visit will be concluded by a trip onboard the French navy
sailing ship, "l'Etoile".

in Warsaw to take full advantage of the unique opportunity offered by the
new Cohesion policy 2007-2013. Danuta Hübner noted that at the European
level rules are now in place for Member States to set clear priorities in
their regional policy strategy. Commissioner Hübner also inaugurated a new
