  • [01] Commission actions since the Chernobyl Disaster

The 26th April will mark the 20th anniversary of the nuclear accident at Chernobyl. Since then, the European Commission has allocated over €470 million to Chernobyl-related projects. This assistance has supported safety improvements at Chernobyl, and provided help to people whose lives are still affected by the accident. The Commission has supported projects which address the social, health and environmental consequences of the disaster. Over and above the aid provided specifically to cope with the aftermath of Chernobyl, the Commission has also made a major contribution to the improvement of nuclear safety across the countries of the former Soviet Union.

[02] Commission allocates €1.5 million for emergency response to cholera outbreaks in Angola

The European Commissioner for Development and Humanitarian Aid, Louis Michel, has proposed to grant €1.5 million to support an emergency response to cholera outbreaks in various provinces of Angola, which have caused more than 550 deaths in the last two months. Extremely heavy rains over much of southern Africa since January, compounded by poverty, lack of basic sanitation facilities and low hygiene standards have resulted in outbreaks of cholera in suburban areas of several cities.

[04] Andris Piebalgs stresses the decisive role of the dialogue between energy consumers and producers

"Cooperation and dialog is in the common interest of both energy producer and consumer countries", said European Energy Commissioner Andris Piebalgs, before leaving to Doha (Qatar) where he will participate in the 10th Ministerial Meeting International Energy Forum on 23rd and 24th April. The International Energy Forum is the highest expression of the producer- consumer dialogue, and it will bring together Energy Ministers from 70 countries to discuss the prospects and policies of the energy sector at a global level.

[05] Commission meets textiles and clothing industry to discuss managing change

European Commission Vice-President Günter Verheugen responsible for enterprise and industry policy and Vladimír Špidla, Commissioner for Employment and Social Affairs, will address the 'Managing change in the textiles and clothing industry' conference in Brussels on Tuesday 25 April. At a time of increasing international competition, this conference will look at developing strategies to better anticipate and handle change at company, regional, national and European level. This conference forms part of a series of concrete initiatives to improve the competitiveness of European industry while accompanying the process of structural change in which it is engaged. Participants include textile and clothing trade associations and trade union representatives, Member States and Candidate Countries representatives with responsibilities for industry, textile and clothing manufacturers, chambers of commerce, supplier industries, training and research institutes, regional authorities and associations and EU institutions. Around 200,000 companies, mostly SMEs, operate in the EU's textiles and clothing industry, employing some 2.4 million people and with a turnover in excess of €207 billion. The sector accounts for 4% of total manufacturing value and occupies 8% of the industrial workforce in the EU. For further information on the European textiles and clothing industry, see:
