[01] EU-Japan Summit (24/04)
The 15th Summit between the European Union and Japan will be held in Tokyo
on 24 April 2006. Alongside European Commission President José Manuel
Durão Barroso and Commissioner for External Relations and European
Neighbourhood Policy Benita Ferrero-Waldner, the EU will be represented by
Austrian Chancellor Wolfgang Schüssel and High Representative for Common
Foreign and Security Policy Javier Solana. Discussions will cover political
and economic aspects of the EU-Japan relationship, global issues, in
particular energy, as well as a range of key international issues including
East Asian regional cooperation, relations with China, the Korean Peninsula,
Russia, Iran and the Middle East.
[02] Benita Ferrero-Waldner to visit Vietnam (21-22/04)
European Commissioner for External Relations and European Neighbourhood
Policy, Benita Ferrero-Waldner will visit Vietnam on 21-22 April for
meetings with Prime Minister Phan Van Khai and Foreign Minister Nguyen Dy
Nien. Discussions will cover a wide range of bilateral and regional issues
of mutual concern: strengthening EU-Vietnam political, economic and trade
links in the context of Vietnam's "Master Plan" on relations with the EU,
upgrading the EU-Vietnam Cooperation Agreement, Vietnam's role in the
region, enhancing cooperation in the framework of ASEM and ongoing global
issues like the WTO and avian flu.
[04] Commission to pay nearly €1.3 million to support Estonia in dealing
with storm disaster in 2005
European Commissioner for Regional Policy and the Solidarity Fund, Danuta
Hübner, and Estonian Finance Minister Aivar Sõerd signed an agreement to
pay €1,289,765 to Estonia to reimburse emergency costs incurred after the
severe storm of January 2005. The grant is being made available through the
European Union Solidarity Fund. It will reimburse public funds spent on the
immediate emergency response, in particular on rescue services, cleaning-up
operations in affected areas and the restoration of basic infrastructure to
working conditions.
[05] March 2006 : Euro-zone annual inflation down to 2.2% ; EU25 down to
2.1%
Euro-zone annual inflation was 2.2% in March 2006, down from 2.3% in
February. A year earlier the rate was 2.1%. Monthly inflation was 0.6% in
March 2006. EU25 annual inflation was 2.1% in March 2006, down from 2.2% in
February. A year earlier the rate was 2.1%. Monthly inflation was 0.5% in
March 2006. EICP annual inflation was 2.1% in March 2006. These figures
come from Eurostat.
[06] Commission approves acquisition of Küsters by Andritz
The European Commission has cleared under the EU Merger Regulation the
proposed acquisition of Eduard Küsters Maschinenfabrik GmbH & Co KG
(Küsters), a German manufacturer of calenders (used in paper and textiles
manufacturing), by the Austrian producer of paper-manufacturing machinery
Andritz GmbH (Andritz). After investigation the Commission concluded that
the transaction would not significantly impede effective competition in the
European Economic Area or any substantial part of it.
[07] European Enterprise Awards' to reward entrepreneurship across the
continent
Officially launched as part of the UK presidency late last year, the
European Enterprise Awards will recognise and reward initiatives by local
and regional authorities to support entrepreneurship. They aim at raising
awareness of positive enterprise activities and celebrate entrepreneurial
success in developing Europe's economy. The deadline for receipt of entries
at national level is 31 May, 2006 with the winners to be announced at a
ceremony in Brussels in December 2006.

on energy
