[01] Markos Kyprianou signs product safety memorandum with China
The European Health and Consumer Protection Commissioner Markos Kyprianou
signed in Beijing on 16 January a memorandum of understanding to promote
cooperation with the Chinese authorities aiming to reduce the numbers of
dangerous and defective consumer products exported to Europe. The
memorandum, also signed by Minister Li Changjiang of the Chinese
governmental agency for Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine
(AQSIQ), aims to establish better communication and collaboration between
the responsible authorities on general product safety, food safety, and
Sanitary and Phytosanitary (SPS) issues, with a view to boosting the
overall protection of both EU and Chinese citizens. Welcoming the signature
of the memorandum, Commissioner Kyprianou said: "Ensuring consumer safety
is a top priority for the Commission, and the memorandum we have signed
with the Chinese authorities is a significant step forward in this regard.
Cooperation with China on product safety has already begun, and a priority
will be to exchange information on defective products which have been
reported through the European Union's rapid alert system. Ensuring the
appropriate follow-up with producers and training on EU safety requirements
are among the other issues which I look forward to discussing when I visit
a major toy factory in the state of Guangzhou on Thursday."
