[02] Commission clears acquisition of Paybox by Mobilkom and ONE
The European Commission has granted clearance under the EU Merger
Regulation to the acquisition of joint control of Paybox Austria AG by
Mobilkom Austria AG & Co KG (MK) and ONE GmbH (ONE), also of Austria. MK is
a mobile telephony operator in Austria and runs both 2G and 3G networks.
ONE, which jointly belongs to the German energy group E.ON, the Norwegian
telecom operator Telenor, the French telecom group Orange/France Telecom
and the Danish telecom company TDC, operates both 2G and 3G mobile
telephony networks in Austria. Paybox is a provider of non-cash payment
systems via mobile devices. The operation was examined under the simplified
merger review procedure.
[03] Commission earmarks €2 million to tackle yellow fever outbreak in
Sudan
The European Commission has drawn up an emergency humanitarian aid decision
for €2 million to help deal with a serious outbreak of yellow fever in
the South Kordofan region of Sudan. This region is a "crossroads" with many
population movements. If left unchecked, the epidemic could quickly extend
to other parts of Sudan. In recent weeks, there have been more than 400
cases of the mosquito-borne disease with 124 deaths reported so far. The
funds are managed by the Commission's Humanitarian Aid Department under the
responsibility of Commissioner Louis Michel.
[04] Benita Ferrero-Waldner on the first anniversay of the Orange
Revolution in Ukraine
On the first anniversary of the Orange Revolution in Ukraine, the European
Commissioner for External Relations and European Neighbourhood Policy,
Benita Ferrero-Waldner said : "The new political reality in Ukraine was
hard won through the courage and determination of the people. We all have a
duty to ensure that their aspirations for a better future are not
disappointed. Those who took to the streets in peaceful demonstrations,
were demanding democracy, better government, and a chance for greater
prosperity. The European Union is helping Ukraine to achieve these goals
through intensive co operation under the European Neighbourhood Policy. One
year on, Ukraine can point to important progress, but there is still much
work to do. The EU will be there to support Ukraine's reform efforts every
step of the way".
