[02] Italy : Commission takes action over breaches of environmental law

The European Commission has decided to pursue infringement proceedings against Italy in 17 cases involving breaches of EU environment law. Several environment areas are concerned : waste management, nature protection, environmental impact assessment, air quality, noise, access to environmental information and others. These actions are part of a series of environment-related infringement decisions against several Member States, which the Commission is now announcing. On the positive side, three previously publicised infringement cases have been closed since Italy has taken the necessary measures.

[04] Commission approves acquisition of Schneidersöhne Papier by Stora Enso

The European Commission has cleared under the EU Merger Regulation the proposed acquisition of Schneidersöhne papier, the German paper merchanting company with sales in various EU Member States, by Stora Enso, the Finnish industrial group active in the production and sale of paper, board, pulp and sawn timber. After examining the operation, the Commission concluded that the transaction would not significantly impede effective competition in the European Economic Area or any substantial part of it.

[06] Commission allocates €20 million in humanitarian aid to vulnerable populations in Afghanistan and neighbouring countries

The European Commission has allocated two new decisions with a total of €20 million in humanitarian aid for victims of the Afghanistan crisis and natural hazard in Afghanistan, Pakistan and Iran. The overarching objective of this funding is to continue assisting the most vulnerable whilst sustaining the return and reintegration process of refugees and internally displaced persons. Funds will be channelled through the European Commission's Humanitarian Aid department (ECHO) under the responsibility of the Commissioner Louis Michel.

[07] EU Election Observation Mission now deployed in Afghanistan

An EU Election Observation Mission (EOM) for the 18 September parliamentary elections has now been deployed to Afghanistan. Working under the leadership of Ms Emma Bonino, Member of the European Parliament and its Committee on Foreign Affairs, the EOM is a further contribution by the European Commission to promote peace and democratisation in Afghanistan.

[08] Internet chat with Louis Michel : the EU at the UN Summit on the Millennium Development Goals (12/09/2005)
