  • [01] UN donors conference on Greater Darfur, Sudan : Commission pledges €10 million in humanitarian aid for the victims of the conflict

The European Commission has today announced its intention to commit an additional €10 million in humanitarian assistance for victims of the conflict in the Greater Darfur region of Sudan. The announcement was made in Geneva at a United Nations donors' conference on the situation in Darfur. This new aid package, which will be channelled through the Commission's Humanitarian Aid Office (ECHO) will meet a range of emergency needs including health, nutrition, shelter and non-food items, water, sanitation and protection. The aid should improve the basic living conditions of up to one million victims of the conflict. The aid package will add up to the €9.2 million humanitarian aid that the Commission has already allocated to the victims of the Darfur crisis.

[03] North Korea : Commission approves € 9.1 million in humanitarian aid

The European Commission has adopted a €9.1 million humanitarian aid plan to boost healthcare for up to ten million people in the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK). The funding, to be allocated by the Commission's Humanitarian Aid Office (ECHO) under the supervision of Commissioner Poul Nielson, will provide much-needed equipment and medicines, and help rehabilitate health centres, hospitals and specialist facilities. The programmes will be implemented by international agencies operating in the country and monitored by ECHO's support office in Pyongyang. Since 2001, ECHO has provided more than €38 million for humanitarian programmes in North Korea.

[04] Commission increases budget for democracy and human rights activities in 2004 : €26.625 extra million available

The European Commission has revised the European Initiative for Democracy and Human Rights (EIDHR) programming and the annual work programme for 2004 to reflect an increase in budget of €26.625 million and to amend some of the priorities contained in the earlier programme, as well as adding new ones.

[06] "For Diversity - Against Discrimination" Journalist Award 2004

Is discrimination at the workplace a major issue ? The majority of EU citizens certainly believe so, according to a Eurobarometer survey carried out last year. In order to raise awareness and stimulate debate on discrimination issues, the European Union has launched the "For Diversity. Against Discrimination." Journalist Award 2004. Journalists in the 25 EU Member States are requested to submit articles on the subject of combating discrimination and promoting diversity in employment. Media professionals and anti-discrimination experts will select 25Â national award winners plus three finalists for the EU-wide award, each of whom can look forward to winning a trip to the EU country of their choice.
