MIDDAY EXPRESSNews from the Press and Communication Directorate General's midday briefingNouvelles du rendez-vous de midi de la Direction Général Presse etbCommunication25/05/04[01] EU-Latin American and Caribbean Summit : moving the strategic partnership forwardThe 25 Heads of State and Government of the European Union and the 33 of Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC) will hold their third Summit in Guadalajara (Mexico) on 28 May 2004. European Commission President Romano Prodi, accompanied by four Commissioners, External Relations Commissioner Chris Patten, Trade Commissioner Pascal Lamy, Agriculture and Fisheries Commissioner Franz Fischler, and Commissioner Joe Borg, will attend the Summit. The Summit should make substantial progress on two priority areas, namely social cohesion and regional integration, as well as increase bi- regional cooperation in multilateral fora. This will be the first Summit of the enlarged EU. Bilateral and regional meetings will complete in-depth discussions with Latin America and Caribbean countries, including an EU- Mercosur Ministerial Meeting to progress on the negotiation of an Association Agreement.[02] EUROsociAL : soutien à la cohésion sociale en Amérique latineFidèle à l'engagement pris de soutenir la cohésion sociale en Amérique latine, la Commission européenne lance EUROsociAL, programme doté de 30 millions €, exécuté dans la région. Grâce à ce programme de cinq ans, la Commission compte aider les pays d'Amérique latine à élaborer et à mettre en œuvre des politiques sociales qui contribueront à réduire le fossé entre les riches et les pauvres. EUROsociAL vise à renforcer la cohésion en créant, auprès des responsables de la définition des politiques publiques, la capacité nécessaire pour prendre en considération la dimension sociale. L'accent portera sur la santé, l'éducation, l'administration de la justice, l'emploi et la fiscalité.[03] Communication seminar "Building our Communication on the euro and EMU"The second seminar of the Directors of Communications of Ministries of Finance and central banks on "Building our Communication on the euro and EMU" of the 25 Member States is taking place on 25 and 26 May in Brussels. The event is organised by the European Commission with the participation of the European Central Bank and the participation of candidate countries.
