[02] Commission takes steps to adapt banana import regime to enlargement

In view of accession of ten new Members States on 1 May 2004, appropriate arrangements have to be made to ensure sufficient supply of bananas to consumers in the new Member States. To this end, the current import volumes for bananas have to be increased for an EU of 25. The exact additional volume of bananas will be based on historical imports to the new Member States and is subject to negotiations with our WTO trading partners and hence still to be determined. For the new additional quantities, the current licensing mechanisms will apply (for details see background). In due time before the beginning of May, the Commission will determine the additional quantities of bananas to ensure a sufficient supply to the market of the enlarged Union, and will take the necessary measures which will enter into force as of 1 May 2004. These transitional measures are without prejudice to the decision taken by the Council to move to a tariff only import system no later than the 1 January 2006.

[03] January 2004 compared to January 2003, first estimates : volume of retail trade up by 1.0% in euro-zone ; EU15 up by 2.2%

In January 2004, compared to January 2003, the volume of retail trade increased by 1.0% in the euro-zone and by 2.2% in the EU15, according to first estimates out today from Eurostat. Compared to December 2003, the sales index increased by 2.4% in the euro-zone and 1.4% in the EU15. In December 2003, compared to November 2003, retail trade fell by 0.1% in the euro-zone but gained 0.1% in the EU15.

[04] Commission provides €1 million in emergency humanitarian aid for victims of house demolitions in the Gaza Strip

The European Commission has adopted an emergency decision for €1 million for victims of house demolitions in the Gaza Strip. 13,000 people who have lost their homes in recent months will be provided with emergency shelter and relief items, and with means for securing alternative accommodation. The funds, channelled through the Commission's Humanitarian Aid Office (ECHO), are directed to the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA), one of the main organisations providing assistance to victims of the humanitarian crisis in the Palestinian Territories.

[05] Commission earmarks €1.8 million in emergency funding for the crisis in Haiti

The European Commission has responded quickly to new needs arising from the conflict in Haiti, by earmarking €1.8 million in emergency humanitarian aid. The main focus of this decision (€1.5 million) is the provision of emergency health care and protection to help victims of the violence. Funds will be channelled through the Humanitarian Aid Office (ECHO), which comes under the responsibility of Commissioner Poul Nielson.

[06] First Dialogue Working Group meets to discuss energy

The European Union yesterday chaired the first Working Group to be held as part of the Pristina-Belgrade dialogue launched at Thessaloniki last year. The Dialogue, which is operating under the auspices of the Special Representative of the UN Secretary General Harri Holkeri, is an essential step towards normalising Pristina-Belgrade relations. Four working groups will oversee co-operation in the specific areas of Missing Persons, Returns, Energy and Transport and Telecommunications. The first Working Group meeting, held yesterday, focussed on Energy. Energy was chosen as the first working group item, due to its importance for the region's economic development and its impact on people's everyday lives. This is a sector in which the EU is not only a major donor of financial assistance but also offers a great deal of technical expertise. This first meeting demonstrated the potential for Pristina and Belgrade to work together in a positive spirit to tackle issues of mutual concern. The EU urges the other Working Groups to meet as soon as possible.
