With Science : EU Launches 10th European Science WeekEuropean Research Commissioner Philippe Busquin yesterday launched "Science Week Europe" in Brussels. The initiative runs from November 3d to November 9th. Now in its 10th year, this EU-wide event focuses on showing, rather than telling, young Europeans how science and technology can have a very real and rewarding effect on their daily lives. The projects selected involve a wide range of national and EU partners science centres and museums, research institutes, schools and universities, media centres, as well as local and regional authorities. In conjunction with other EU initiatives in the "Science and society" area, Science Week Europe should help to forge closer ties between the world of science and the lives of EU citizens. "Science week 2003" initiatives include fairs and exhibitions, conferences, publications, debates, virtual and real science villages, websites, games, screenwriting competitions and visits to research centres and labs.[03] La Commission approuve une fusion dans le secteur espagnol des assurancesLa Commission européenne a décidé d'approuver l'opération par laquelle l'entreprise espagnole Vidacaixa acquiert Swiss Life España (SLE), entreprise basée en Espagne appartenant au holding Swiss Life Insurance and Pension Company. Le seul domaine dans lequel les activités des deux sociétés se recoupent est le secteur espagnol de l'assurance vie ; ce chevauchement n'entraîne cependant pas de position dominante.[04] "Lifestyle changes can prevent diabetes epidemic", says David ByrneDavid Byrne, the European Commissioner for Health and Consumer Protection, today endorsed a campaign to encourage Europeans to make healthy changes to their lifestyle so as to avoid diabetes. EU Diabetes Week, which runs from today until Friday, 7 November this year has prevention of diabetes as its theme. Over the past ten years the prevalence of diabetes in Europe has increased by nearly 20%. This is linked to Europeans being increasingly overweight and taking less and less exercise. The European Region of the International Diabetes Federation (IDF Europe), which is organising the week, wants to get the message across that Europeans can reverse this trend by adopting healthier lifestyles. In order to raise awareness of diabetes, and the risks associated with it, amongst EU policy makers IDF Europe will be putting on an exhibition in the European Parliament in Brussels including the possibility to test the in depth glucose level (A1C), blood pressure and cholesterol levels of visitors. Commissioner Byrne said : "Europe's obesity epidemic brings with it a deadly friend, in the shape of a potential diabetes epidemic. We must get the message across to Europe's citizens that a healthy diet and regular exercise will help them avoid debilitating diseases such as diabetes. That is why I strongly support EU diabetes week." EU Diabetes Week will be officially launched at a reception in the European Parliament this evening at 18h30.[05] EU/Russia Summit (06/11, Rome)European Commission President Romano Prodi and Commissioner for External Relations Chris Patten will represent the Commission at the 12th Summit between the European Union and Russia, to be held in Rome on 6 November 2003. Italian Prime Minister, Silvio Berlusconi, will head the EU delegation, assisted by the High Representative for Common Foreign and Security Policy, Javier Solana. The summit will seek to make progress on the four common spaces agreed at the St. Petersburg Summit last May. Leaders will also discuss the common democratic values that underpin EU- Russia relations, the prospects for early Russian ratification of the Kyoto Protocol, cooperation on nuclear and maritime safety, and the impact of the EU's enlargement on bilateral relations.[06] Autre matériel diffuséSpeech by President Prodi : "The euro, the EU's innovation strategy and the EU's enlargement" at Economic Club of New York (03/11)Discours de Mme de Palacio : "Nouvelles perspectives pour un marché européen de l'électricité véritablement intégré" au Colloque 'Les réseaux d'électricité' organisé par le RTE (Paris) Discours de Mme de Palacio : "Los próximos desafíos para la Europa de la Energía" devant la commission ITRE du Parlement européen (03/11) Discours de M.
