[01] President Prodi met Stjepan Mesicc, President of the Republic of
Croatia
On 10 February, European Commission President Romano Prodi and External
Relations Commissioner Chris Patten invited the President of the Republic
of Croatia, Mr Stjepan Mesic, to a working lunch to discuss the current
status of relations between the EU and Croatia. Mr Neven Mimica, Minister
for European Integration, was also present. During the meeting, President
Prodi underlined the Commission's support to Croatia's reform process and
reiterated the European integration perspective for this country and other
South-eastern European countries. President Mesic informed of the Croatia's
intention to submit application for EU membership on 18 February in Athens.
[02] Commission clears joint venture between Acea, BTicino and Siemens
Metering
The European Commission has granted clearance under the Merger Regulation
to plans by Italy's Acea Distribuzione S.p.A., which is controlled via the
holding ACEA S.p.A. by the municipality of Rome, BTicino S.p.A., a
subsidiary of Legrand S.A. (which in turn is jointly controlled by the
financial holding Wendel Investissement S.A. and investment fund Kohlberg
Kravis & Roberts) and Siemens Metering S.p.A. (also controlled by KKR) to
create a joint venture. The joint venture will design, develop, manufacture
and market a new system for the management and control of low voltage
electrical distribution networks. (The operation, which was notified on 10
January 2003, is identical to case COMP/M.3006 Acea Distribuzione/BTicino/Siemens
notified to the Commission on 16.10.2002 and cleared on 19.11.2002. Changes
in the structure of ownership of both BTicino/Legrand and Siemens Metering
have required a new notification. The operation was examined under the
simplified merger review procedure).
[03] Commission clears acquisition of joint control of Finnish company
Nordkalk in limestone business
The European Commission has approved the proposed acquisition of joint
control over the Finnish company Nordkalk Corporation by Ahlström Capital
together with CapMan Capital Management Ltd from Partek Corporation, its
current owner. Nordkalk is a producer of limestone-based products in the
Northern Europe.
[06] Commission clears dual listed company combining the cruise activities
of Carnival and P&O Princess
The European Commission has approved an agreement whereby cruise operators
Carnival Corp. of the United States and Britain's P&O Princess plc will
create a dual listed company structure combining their activities. The
Commission has concluded that there have been no significant changes in the
cruise markets in Europe since July, when it cleared what was then a
takeover bid from Carnival for P&O Princess.
[07] Somalia : Commission grants €5 million in humanitarian aid
The European Commission has adopted a humanitarian aid package worth €5
million to help tackle some of the severe humanitarian needs in Somalia,
resulting from prolonged conflict, drought and floods. This latest decision
is targeted at those sectors where needs are greatest, namely health, water
and sanitation, and food security. More than a million people will benefit
from this aid. It is channelled through the Humanitarian Aid Office (ECHO),
which comes under the responsibility of Commissioner Poul Nielson.
