  • [02] Structural funds : Commission approves regional development programmes amounting to euro 281 million for South and East Netherlands The European Commission has approved two regional development programmes for "South and East Netherlands" for the period 2000-2006. The programmes amount to euro 281 million in financial support from the European Union. The European funding will attract further investments from the Netherlands' public and private sector up to a total amount of euro 787 million. The two programmes concern the Dutch provinces Noord-Brabant, Limburg, Gelderland and Overijssel. The funds will promote sustainable spatial development of these mainly rural regions and will thereby contribute to the diversification of economic activities.
  • [04] Statement by European Commissioner for Enlargement Günter Verheugen on Cyprus "The European Commission has contributed actively to the efforts of the UN Secretary General to bring about a resumption of the talks aimed at finding a solution to the Cyprus problem. My meeting with the leader of the Turkish Cypriot community, Mr Denktash, in Zurich on 27 August underlined the EU's clear preference for a solution to be reached before enlargement, although this is not pre-condition for Cyprus's accession. Against this background I am very disappointed that Mr Denktash has not accepted the UN Secretary General's invitation to talks on 12 September. The Commission considers that the window of opportunity for reaching a solution before accession remains open and encourages all interested parties to undertake all efforts with this aim in view."
  • [05] Chris Patten to visit Skopje on 6-7 September 2001 European Commissioner for External Relations Chris Patten and Mr Javier Solana, EU High Representative for Common Foreign and Security Policy, will visit Skopje on 6-7 September. Commissioner Patten will focus on particular on the substantial package of additional assistance which the European Commission has drawn up to support the recently signed Framework Agreement, and how that assistance can be delivered promptly. He will stress that this help is closely tied to the full implementation of the provisions of the Framework Agreement. The visit takes place immediately before the informal meeting of EU Foreign Ministers this weekend, at which Mr Patten and Mr Solana will be present.
