  • [01] Commission clears acquisition of Scandic Hotels by Hilton The European Commission has cleared the acquisition of Scandic Hotels AB (Scandic) by Hilton Group plc (Hilton) by way of a public bid announced on 23 April 2001. The Commission has considered that the proposed concentration does not lead to the creation or strengthening of a dominant position.
  • [02] Financial reporting : Commission welcomes adoption of fair value accounting Directive The European Commission has welcomed adoption on 31 May by the EU's Council of Ministers and the European Parliament of a Directive to modernise EU accounting rules by introducing the "fair value" accounting method. The Directive amends the EU's Accounting Directives to take account of developments in markets (such as widespread use of so called derivatives), business and international accounting standards. It will make it easier for European companies raising capital worldwide to comply with the financial reporting requirements of international capital markets and thus compete on equal terms with non-European competitors. The fact that this Directive has been adopted only 15 months after it was proposed by the Commission (see IP/00/187) highlights the effectiveness of the extremely cooperative and productive approach that the Commission, Parliament and Council have taken to working together on this initiative. The Directive forms part of the Financial Services Action Plan (see IP/00/1269).
  • [03] Public hearing on the Future of the Common Fisheries Policy The European Commission is organising a public hearing on "The Future of the Common Fisheries Policy (CFP)" to be held in Brussels from 5 to 7 June 2001. The hearing will give participants the opportunity to express their views and take part in the debate on the key issues and options identified by the Commission in its Green Paper which was launched last March. Representatives from the fisheries and aquaculture industry, NGOs concerned with the environment and development co-operation, consumers associations, national and regional authorities, scientific experts, as well as individuals interested in the Common Fisheries Policy are expected to attend this hearing. Franz Fischler, Commissioner for Agriculture, Rural Development and Fisheries, will open the discussion which will cover the following topics : management of fisheries resources, fisheries and the environment, fleet policy, monitoring and control, conservation in the Mediterranean, governance, aquaculture and processing, the economic and social dimension of the CFP and the external dimension of the CFP. The Commission will present its proposals to the Council and the European Parliament for the review of the CFP before the end of this year. Journalists are welcome to attend. Commissioner Fischler will hold a press conference on Tuesday, 5 June 2001 at 13h00 in Room S1 at the Charlemagne Building (170 rue de la Loi, Brussels).
