[01] Euro-zone and EU15 GDP up by 0.7% ; +3.4% compared to the third
quarter of 1999
(! embargo 12 am !) The euro-zone and EU15 GDP both grew by 0.7% during the
third quarter of 2000, compared to the previous quarter, according to first
estimates published today by Eurostat. These figures follow a rise of 0.8%
and 0.9% respectively for the euro-zone and the EU15, in the second quarter
of 2000. Compared to the third quarter of 1999, GDP in the euro-zone and
the EU15 rose by 3.4% (+3.7% and +3.6% respectively in the second quarter).
The US economy grew also by 0.7% in the third quarter, compared with 1.4%
in the previous quarter.
[02] Commission approves euro 10 billion aid for Saxony
The European Commission has approved an Operational Programme (OP) for
economic and social development in the German Land of Saxony. This new
programme aims to create 32,000 new jobs, maintain 55,000 others, and to
provide 316,000 people with training designed to improve their
qualifications. It forms part of the Community Support Framework for German
regions eligible for Objective 1 of the Structural Funds. The European
Union will contribute euro 4.858 billion to this programme. This
contribution will go towards a total of almost euro 10 billion between 2000
and 2006, of which euro 2.3 billion will come from the German public sector
and euro 4.1 billion from private investors.
