  • [01] Romano Prodi and ten Commissioners attend European Business Summit to shape European innovation

A two-day Summit of European business and political leaders begins tomorrow in Brussels. The European Business Summit, organised by the European and Belgian employers' federations UNICE and FEB, will give some of the most senior CEOs worldwide the chance to deliver concrete proposals to European Commissioners on ways of making the European economy more dynamic and innovative. President Romano Prodi and Commissioner Erkki Liikanen will deliver keynote speeches at the event, and nine other Commissioners will participate in workshops devoted to e-business, biotechnology, trade, intellectual property, start-up funding, R&D and labour markets. The event takes place at the Sheraton Hotel, Place Rogier, in Brussels.

[03] Industrial producer prices rose by 0.1% in euro-zone ; prices unchanged in EU15

(! embargo 12 am !) The euro-zone April figure showed the smallest increase in the past eleven months and the EU15 index did not rise for the first time since more than a year, Eurostat reports today. The euro-zone industrial producer price index edged up by 0.1% in April 2000 compared with the previous month. EU15 prices were unchanged in April. In March the index had increased by 0.7% in the euro-zone and 0.5% in the EU15. The lower increase of intermediate goods prices slowed down the rise of the overall index. Producer prices increased by 5.7% in the euro-zone and 5.1% in the EU15 compared to April 1999. The rise in March had been 6.2% in the euro-zone and 5.6% in EU15.

[05] Franz Fischler excludes two-tier CAP in the long run

"We must all recognise that we are working towards the same goal - Poland taking its rightful place in Europe and participating fully and fairly in all EU activities", Franz Fischler, European Commissioner for Agriculture, Rural Development and Fisheries, declared today in Warsaw in his speech at a conference on 'Polish rural areas facing the challenge of European integration'. Mr Fischler recalled the historic role Poland and the Polish Catholic Church had played in overturning the communist system. He underlined Pope John Paul II's statement that Europe now has an historic opportunity to come together in unity and stressed that Poland and the EU share common values. He made clear, however, that enlargement presents challenges not only for the candidate countries but also for the EU. "Such a significant step requires careful preparation - on both sides."
