[02] EU allocates additional funds to Turkey for the pre-accession strategy

EU Foreign Affairs Ministers unanimously adopted a European Commission proposal to provide Turkey with a euro 15 million grant during a three-year period. The adoption of this regulation is a direct consequence of the conclusions of the Helsinki European Council of December 1999. At that time the Heads of State and Government stated that Turkey is a candidate country designated to join the Union and that Turkey, like other candidates States, will benefit from a pre-accession strategy. Coming back from an official visit to Ankara, Commissioner Günter Verheugen - in charge of the enlargement process - underlined that it is essential to provide financial assistance to stimulate and to support Turkey's reforms.

[03] Margot Wallström welcomes G8 commitments on climate change and sustainable development

G8 Environment Ministers and European Commissioner for Environment, Margot Wallström, met in Otsu, Japan, on 7-9 April to discuss a range of international sustainable development issues. Mrs Wallström expressed her satisfaction with the outcome of the meeting : "I think it is crucial that we, as G8 countries, have committed ourselves to an outcome of COP6 that ensures the environmental integrity of the Kyoto Protocol and its targets. This is a promising perspective for The Hague later this year. Around the table we shared the view that at Rio+10 in 2002 we have to move from words to action. We must also address poverty eradication as the key concern for developing countries. Protection of the environment and economic development of the poorer countries can go together." The results of the meeting are contained in a Communiqué adopted by the Ministers on Sunday.
