[01] Commission approves acquisition of joint control of HEW by Vattenfall
and the Freie und Hansestadt Hamburg
The European Commission has approved an operation by which Vattenfall AB,
Sweden, and the Freie und Hansestadt Hamburg (FHH), a German Bundesland,
acquire joint control of the German electricity generator Hamburgische
Electricitäts-Werke AG (HEW). The operation leads to insignificant overlaps
in the energy sector and does therefore not raise competition concerns.
nationales.
[03] Montenegro the EU contribution
European Commissioner for External Relations Chris Patten announced
yesterday at the General Affairs Council the doubling of support from the
European Union's Obnova 2000 budget line for projects in support of
Montenegro from euro 10 million to euro 20 million. At this occasion, the
Commission also distributed to Member States Ministers of Foreign Affairs a
fact sheet on Montenegro - the EU contribution.
[04] Poul Nielson addresses the ACP-EU joint parliamentary assembly in
Abuja, Nigeria
As part of his two day official visit to Nigeria, the European Commissioner
for Development Cooperation and Humanitarian Aid, Mr Poul Nielson, today
delivered a speech to the 30th ACP-EU Joint Assembly on the subject of the
new EU-ACP Partnership Agreement, which will succeed the Lomé IV
Convention. Mr Nielson hailed the new agreement as 'modern, comprehensive
and innovative which will inspire and guide EU-ACP relations over the next
20 years in the areas of poverty eradication, trade, development and
political dialogue'. The Agreement is due to be signed in Fiji on 8 June.
Whilst in Nigeria, Mr Nielson will meet with the Nigerian President, Mr
Obasanjo. He will also hold bilateral meetings with other members of the
Nigerian government and sign two financing agreements.
