[01] Commission clears packaging joint venture between Ahlström and CapMan
The European Commission has decided to authorise an operation by which
Ahlström and CapMan acquire joint control of Folding Carton Partners and
the folding carton activities of the Åkerlund & Rausing Group. In view of
the fact that the parties' activities in folding carton converting are
largely complementary and that their combined market shares are unlikely to
lead to any adverse competition effects, the Commission has decided not to
oppose the notified operation and declare it compatible with the common
market and the functioning of the EEA agreement.
[02] Commissioners visit storm-stricken regions in France and Germany
European Commissioners for Regional Policy and Budget, Michel Barnier and
Michaele Schreyer, will inform themselves on the spot about storm damages
in most effected regions in the Member States. Commissioner Barnier will
visit the French departments Creuse and Charente Maritime on 20 January,
Commissioner Schreyer will travel to the Black Forest in the German Land of
Baden-Württemberg on 19 January. The Commission has highlighted the
possibilities for support in a Communication last Wednesday and emphasised
its willingness for flexibility in the use of the existing instruments.
[03] Chris Patten met Vice-Ministers for Foreign Affairs from Peru and
Ecuador
European Commissioner for External Relations Chris Patten met today with
the Vice-Ministers for Foreign Affairs of Peru, Mr Jorge Valdez Carrillo
and Ecuador, Ambassador Francisco Carreón Mena. He expressed his
satisfaction at the implementation of the October 1998 peace agreements
between the two countries which brought an end to a 150-year cross-border
problem. He stressed the importance of this act for the stability of Latin
America. Both countries set up an economic development plan for their
common border area and requested the financial support of the international
community. Mr Patten assured the Vice Ministers of the support of the
Commission for the donors meeting in Paris on 24 and 25 January 2000, which
will focus on the border regions development plan. He announced the
Commission's initial intention to contribute to the cross-border
development plan with euro 40 million, to be committed in 2000. These funds
will aid in the reconstruction of the main Guayaquil-Piura road, the
principal transport and economic trade route between the two countries.
