CONTENTS / CONTENU

  • [01] Le PIB de la zone euro et de l'UE15 en hausse de 0,5%
  • [02] Favourable opinion on genetically modified tomato for processing
  • [03] EU/ACP Joint Assembly meeting

[02] Favourable opinion on genetically modified tomato for processing

The Scientific Committee on Food expressed a favourable opinion on the safety of products derived by processing of a genetically modified tomato. Within the framework of the EU Novel Food Regulation, a request for placing on the market of a tomato variety intended solely for processing had been made (ZENECA, UK). When ripe, the tomato softens less quickly than its conventional counterparts, thus conferring better processing properties. The fruit is reported to be unpalatable and is therefore not intended to be consumed raw. It is processed, using heat treatment, to products like diced canned tomatoes, juice, puree, etc. This heat treatment biologically inactivates the modified genes and their protein products. The Committee concluded that, from the consumer health point of view, processed foods derived from these tomatoes are as safe as products from conventional fruits. The opinion is available on the website under the following address : http://europa.eu.int/comm/dg24/health/sc/scf/outcome_en.html

    [03] EU/ACP Joint Assembly meeting

The 29th Session of the EU-ACP Joint Assembly will be held from 10-15 October 1999 in Nassau, the Bahamas. The Joint Assembly brings together 71 Members of the European Parliament and 71 parliamentary representatives (or designated by their Parliament) of the ACP States, twice a year, to discuss topics of mutual interest. At this year's meeting, statements will be heard from Mrs Kirsti Lintonen, Under-Secretary of State, President-in-office of the EU Council, Mr Severin Adjovi, Minister of Commerce, Arts and Tourism from Bénin, President-in-office of the ACP Council, and Mr Poul Nielson, Commissioner for Development and Humanitarian Affairs. The main points to be discussed on the agenda are the General Report on the fight against poverty in the ACP countries and in the EU (Rapporteur Mr Fernandez Martin), the future of EU-ACP relations (Rapporteur Mrs Kinnock) and a hearing on relations between the Caribbean region and the EU, with invited experts. The Assembly will be debating the situation in different countries or regions, including Great Lakes, Sudan, Angola, Ethiopia and Eritrea, Sierra Leone, Solomon Islands, and East Timor. One of the most important outputs from this 29th session, will be the vote on the resolution on the Kinnock report, on the future of ACP-EU relations Post-Lomé.
