  • [01] Commission has extended the safeguard measures in relation to dioxin contamination

Following the decision taken on Wednesday 2 June on domestic fowl, eggs and derived products because of the possibility of dioxin contamination, the European Commission has decided on Friday 4 June to extend the safeguard measures to include other food products which may have been contaminated by the same substance. In view of the urgency of the matter it has used the legal possibilities available to take the decision on the basis of the urgent safeguard provisions and has convened a special meeting of the Standing Veterinary Committee this afternoon to examine the matter further. This action has been prompted by the fact that the Belgian authorities suspect that the dioxin contaminated feedingstuff may have been fed to livestock other than domestic fowl. The same requirements will apply as in the earlier decision i.e. no placing on the market of products from restricted farms, tracing and withdrawal of products already on the market, the provision of information to other Member States, certification for export, etc. The restrictions will therefore be extended to cover products from the pork and bovine farms which are placed under restriction by the Belgian authorities ; and will apply to products coming from these farms since January 15th. These measures do not apply to products which have been shown not to be contaminated on the basis of analysis or which come from holdings which have not been placed under restriction.

    [03] Commission hosts research conference
