[02] Commission partially extends group exemption in the air transport
sector
The European Commission has adopted a Regulation which partially extends
the validity of its group exemption Regulation in the air transport sector,
Regulation (EEC) No 1617/93. The Commission thus adjusts the legal
environment created by Regulation (EEC) No 1617/93 in order to match the
present state of development in the air transport industry. Regulation No
(EEC) 1617/93 will continue to apply to certain categories of agreements
and concerted practices regarding passenger tariff consultations and slot
allocation at airports until 30 June 2001. However, the Commission has not
renewed Regulation No (EEC) 1617/93 for joint planning and coordination of
airline schedules and joint operations. The Regulation entered into force
on May 28th 1999.
[03] Commission and Nigeria announce re-engagement of development
cooperation
The European Commission and Nigeria have today announced in a Joint
Communiqué the re-engagement of their development cooperation. The
announcement follows the installation of the democratically elected
President Olusegun Obasanjo on 29 May and recent decision of the Council of
the European Union (EU) to lift all the remaining sanctions against Nigeria
and to resume full, unrestricted development cooperation, as of 1st June.
"Contributing to the consolidation of democracy, to good governance and
economic and social development is important not only for the Nigerian
people which has suffered too long under military dictatorship, but also
for the West African region and even Africa as a whole", says Mr. Pinheiro,
Commissioner responsible for the cooperation with the African Caribbean and
Pacific Countries. The EU abolished already in October 1998 most of the
sanctions it adopted in 1995, which were then motivated by the human rights
violations by the military regime of that time. Until now, however,
development cooperation has been limited to actions in support of human
rights and democracy, poverty alleviation through decentralised
cooperation.
