[02] World No Tobacco Day - 31 May : Padraig Flynn reviews EU's action to
fight smoking
Speaking in advance of "World No Tobacco Day - 31 May", Padraig Flynn,
European Commissioner with responsibility for health matters, reviewed
recent Commission action to tackle smoking - a habit that kills half a
million people in the European Union each year. He singled out as "landmark
events" the June 1998 Directive to curb tobacco advertising and sponsorship
and the conference to be held this July to formulate recommendations on
ways to regulate the yields of nicotine, tar and carcinogens in tobacco
products. Mr Flynn also referred to the numerous campaigns and programmes
such as "Europe against Cancer" that target at the general public and more
especially at high-risk groups such as women and young people, who are
taking up smoking in ever greater numbers. A detailed report of the
progress made by the Commission in this field since its 1996 Communication
on Combating Tobacco Consumption is now being prepared for submission to
the European Parliament and the Council of Ministers.
