  • [01] Jacques Santer welcomes the smooth launching of the euro on the international financial markets

The President of the European Commission, Jacques Santer, said today that the smooth launching of the euro on the international financial markets was a visible signal for its credibility. "The euro will be a stable and strong currency, because it is founded in a real culture of stability that is now widespread throughout the European Union (EU). Under these circumstances, the euro will contribute to creating the conditions for prosperity and employment in an EU that is opening up to its neighbours." On 31 December 1998, the euro conversion rates have been laid down in a historical decision. Subsequently, as from the 1 January 1999, the euro has replaced eleven national currencies and become a reference currency for others. "During the week-end, thousands of people in central banks, financial institutions or other organisations have been working hard to make the introduction of the euro a success as from the first trading day, Monday 4 January. The Commission wants to pay tribute to all those involved."

[03] Commission adopts report on supervision and control of shipments of radioactive waste between Member States and into and out of the EU

The European Commission has adopted its second report on the application in the Member States of Directive 92/3/Euratom on the supervision and control of shipments of radioactive waste between Member States and into and out of the European Union. The report covers 1994 and 1995. This is a requirement under the Directive, which establishes a strict system of supervision and control by the national competent authorities on transfrontier shipments of radioactive waste. The basic principle is that each shipment is subject to prior authorisation by the competent authorities of the State of origin and such authorisation can only be delivered with the prior informed consent of the competent authorities of all the States involved in the shipment.

[05] Humanitarian aid news : Asia

The European Commission has approved humanitarian aid for projects in Afghanistan (euros 1.77 million), Sri Lanka (euros 1 million) and South East Asia (euros 1 million). The aid, managed by the European Community Humanitarian Office (ECHO), will enable humanitarian organisations to carry out projects over the next six months.
