[01] Commission approves the acquisition of UTA Telekom by VTÖB and
Swisscom
The European Commission has cleared a concentration by which Vereinigte
Telekom Österreich Beteiligungs GmbH (VTÖB) and Swisscom Telekommunikation
Holding GmbH (Swisscom Holding) acquire joint control of UTA Telekom AG.
The joint venture will operate in data communication via terrestrial lines,
voice telephony and leased lines in Austria. In view of the dominance of
Austria's formerly state-owned monopolist, PTA, UTA's present market shares
are irrelevant. The company intends to establish itself as a serious
alternative provider of telecom services in Austria over the next decade.
UTA will face competition from other competitors entering the rapidly
growing telecom market, such as Telering, Verbund or Citykom. The present
operation is therefore pro-competitive and does not create or strengthen a
dominant position.
seul transporteur.
[03] Hans van den Broek launches stagiaires' charity project in support of
Roma communities
European Commissioner for External Affairs Hans van den Broek will
ceremonially start the engines of a truck as part of the Commission
stagiaires' charity project supporting Roma communities in South Eastern
Europe. The truck contains one of two brick-making machines for a social
housing project for Roma in Bulgaria. He will also hand over a check of BEF
200,000 to a representative from the schooling project for young Roma women
in the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia (FYROM). Also present will be
Boyko Kotzev and Zoran Stojcevski from the missions of Bulgaria and FYROM
to the European Union (EU). "This charity project will make a valuable
contribution to counter the social exclusion of Roma. It testifies to the
wide scope of our stagiaires' initiative and concern beyond their daily
work", said Mr van den Broek. Twice a year some 600 European graduates
come to work as stagiaires in the Commission through its five months
traineeship programme. Earlier this year in February, the last group of
trainees sent wheelchairs and medical supplies to mentally and physically
handicapped in Estonia. EU support for the Roma communities has focused
mainly on education, training, legal projects and combating unemployment
and amounts to ECU 12 million since 1993. The event will take place in
front of the Council building at Rond Point Schuman at 12h00 on Thursday,
16 July
