[01] 'El Niņo' in Peru : Commission approves humanitarian aid worth ECU
1.535 million
The European Commission has approved a package of humanitarian aid worth
ECU 1.535 million to counter the effects of freak weather caused by the El
Niņo phenomenon in Peru. The aid, managed by the European Community
Humanitarian Office (ECHO), will enable two European non-governmental
organisations to carry out appropriate actions over the next six months :
Dutch Interchurch Aid is working in the departments of Ayacucho,
Huancavelica and Apurimac, while Acsur 'Las Segovias' (Spain) in the Grau
region. They will provide food, medicines, tools and carry out water and
sanitation projects. ECHO's coordinator in Quito, Ecuador, will be in
charge of logistics for 'El Niņo'-related projects.
