[03] Commission decides to open in-depth investigations regarding the WOLTERS KLUWER/REED ELSEVIER merger

The European Commission has decided to open in-depth investigations in the Wolters Kluwer/Reed Elsevier case. The planned merger between Wolters Kluwer and Reed Elsevier raises serious doubts as to its compatibility with the common market since there are very significant overlaps between the activities of both parties in several areas (for example in the areas of legal and tax publishing), where the position of either one or both of the parties seems already strong at the moment. Reed Elsevier plc. is a UK registered company, which is jointly owned by Reed and Elsevier. Reed Elsevier plc. operates world-wide in publishing and the provision of information. Wolters Kluwer is a Dutch publishing company, active in 25 countries, including most European countries. Reed Elsevier plc. and Wolters Kluwer are the two largest publishers of information for professional use.

[04] Christos Papoutsis: "After Kyoto, we need a greener energy policy and substantial measures coordinated internationally"

Energy Commissioner Christos Papoutsis expressed his satisfaction that an agreement was reached in Kyoto and called for a "greener" energy policy in order to achieve the required results. In a statement, Mr Papoutsis said : "I consider it significant that we succeeded in reaching a common agreement with the USA, Japan and the other industrialized countries. Facing the challenge of climate change and fulfilling the commitments we undertook in Kyoto requires a greener energy policy. The reduction in energy demand, through energy saving and greater energy efficiency, as well as the promotion of renewable energy sources are among the basic elements of our future energy policy. These elements are contained in our proposal for a Framework Programme for Energy and our Strategy and Action Plan for the promotion of renewables. But the very serious problem of climate change can be faced by substantial measures coordinated internationally. And I am pleased that a consensus was reached in Kyoto".
