  • [01] Jacques Santer visits Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia

European Commission President Jacques Santer will visit Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia from 3-4 November 1997. The main objective of his mission is to discuss the enlargement process after the adoption of the Commission's "Agenda 2000", which recommended opening membership negotiation with five central european countries, including one of the three Baltics, Estonia. The President will underline, in particular, the all-inclusive nature of the enlargement process for applicant countries. In each of the three Baltics, President Santer will outline main sectors where pre-accession efforts need to be intensified and emphasize the importance of continued good regional cooperation between the three countries, as well as with their neighbours, particularly Russia. In Latvia and in Estonia, the President will also discuss the situation of minorities, including the acceleration of the naturalisation process. In Lithuania, President Santer will meet the President Algirdas Brazauskas, the Prime Minister Gediminas Vagnorius, the Foreign Affairs Minister Algirdas Saudargas and the Speaker of the Parliament (Seimas), Vytautas Landsbergis. In Latvia, meetings are foreseen with the President Guntis Ulmanis, the Prime Minister Guntars Krasts, the Foreign Affairs Minister Valdis Birkavs and the Speaker of the Parliament (Saeima), Alfreds Cepanis. He will also give a speech during the EC-Latvia Joint Parliamentary Committee. In Estonia, President Santer will meet the President Lennart Meri, the Prime Minister Mart Siiman and the Foreign Affairs Minister Toomas Hendrik Ilves.

[04] Russian Federation: Commission approves humanitarian aid worth ECU 700, 000 for victims of conflict in Chechnya

The European Commission has approved humanitarian aid worth ECU 700,000 for victims of the conflict in Chechnya. The aid, managed by the European Community Humanitarian Office (ECHO), will enable the British non- governmental organisation Merlin to carry out a programme in the region until March 1998. It will provide 45 polyclinics in Grozny with supplies of essential drugs, and carry out minor repairs to those that incurred war damage. It will continue its programme of trucking chlorinated water in Grozny, and make minor repairs to the water and sanitation system. It will also carry out regular surveillance of infectious diseases. This grant is ECHO's second for victims of the war this year. The first amounted to ECU 1.4 million.

[05] Poland and Czech Republic: Commission approves aid worth ECU 1.606 million for flood victims

The European Commission has approved humanitarian aid worth a total of ECU 1.606 million for victims of floods in Poland and the Czech Republic. The aid, managed by the European Community Humanitarian Office (ECHO), will enable European non-governmental organisations to carry out a programme of emergency repairs of schools and homes before winter sets in. This grant tops up ECU 2.5 million of humanitarian aid made available this summer at the peak of the crisis.
