[01] Commission approves joint venture creating second national
telecommunications operator in Switzerland
The European Commission has approved a concentrative joint venture between
two telecoms operators - British Telecom and Tele Danmark - and three Swiss
companies - SBB (the national railway company), Migros (a supermarket
chain) and Union Bank of Switzerland - which will operate the second
national telecomunnications system in Switzerland. The joint venture
combines the expertise of British Telecom and Tele Denmark with assets
contributed by the Swiss participants. The operation has no significant
effect within the EEA (European Economic Area) but it fell within the
jurisdiction of the Commission because the parties satisfied the turnover
thresholds in the Merger Regulation.
[02] La Commission soutient la modernisation des aéroports de Bari et de
Palermo
La Commission européenne vient d'approuver un financement communautaire de
5 millions d'Ecus permettant d'améliorer les infrastructures et services
des aéroports de Bari et de Palermo-Punta Raisi et d'augmenter ainsi la
fluidité et la sécurité du trafic aérien. D'une part, on procèdera à
l'aménagement de certaines pistes existantes afin de répondre aux normes de
l'Organisation de l'Aviation Civile Internationale. D'autre part, un
système automatique de contrôle des déformations subies par ces pistes sera
mis en place, ce qui permettra une meilleure planification de leur
entretien.
[03] La Commission finance un atelier d'auto-formation sur la protection
civile en milieu urbain
Encouragé et financé par la Commission européene, un atelier d'auto-
formation ayant pour thème "La Protection Civile en milieu urbain", aura
lieu à Lisbonne les 18 et 19 avril prochain. L'objectif de cet atelier est
de réunir des hauts responsables des administrations nationales de
protection civile et des experts en gestion des urgences venant non
seulement des Etats membres de l'Union européenne mais aussi de l'EEE
(Espace Economique Européen) et le l'AELE (Association Européenne de Libre
Echange), pour débattre du rôle de la protection civile dans les zones
urbaines. Ils analyseront plus particulièrement la prise en compte des
risques et les politiques de prévention, l'objectif étant d'établir une
collaboration efficace entre personnalités politiques, autorités et experts
dans les Etats membres dont les missions de planification d'urgence et
d'opérations de secours sont semblables. Sur la base des conclusions qui
seront reprises dans le rapport final, les services de la Commission
identifieront les initiatives à encourager et, après consultation au sein
du Réseau Permanent des Correspondants Nationaux en matière de protection
civile, feront le nécessaire pour en assurer la concrétisation.
[04] A Commissioner goes Internet
Today Agriculture and Rural Development Commissioner Franz Fischler
launches his Internet-Homepage, forming part of the DG VI -Pages on the
EUROPA-Server, which is due to start simultaneously. The ever increasing
use and development of the Internet, facilitates a wider distribution of
information and therefore has an important contribution to make to the
Commission objectives of transparency and of bringing every aspect of the
European Union closer to the citizen. Selected key documents, speeches and
background information, comments and a personal portrait of Mr Fischler
shall help to establish a direct interactive information link to the
Citizen, who in turn can get in touch with the Commissioner by e-mail.
