[01] Commission approves the acquisition by KNP group of two paper
merchants in Germany and Italy
The European Commission has decided to approve a concentration by which the
Dutch paper and packaging company NV Koninklijke KNP BT ("KNP BT") acquires
from UK's Bunzl group two graphic paper distribution subsidiaries, being
the German Wilhelm Seiler GmbH and the Italian Bunzl Italia SpA. The
Commission found that KNP BT's increasing market position both in Italy and
Germany is not likely to result in a dominant position on those markets,
since other distributors as well as paper producers will ensure sufficient
competition.
[02] Christos Papoutsis says that without the active Russian participation
the Energy Charter Treaty would be a "meaningless instrument"
"The ratification of the Energy Charter Treaty by the Russian Federation is
of utmost importance" stressed today in Moscow Energy Commissioner Christos
Papoutsis. The Commissioner made this point addressing a seminar on the
Energy Charter Treaty, which is organised in Moscow for the Members of the
Russian Federal Assembly (Duma). The Commissioner said that the Treaty "is
a model for East-West cooperation based on the principles of market economy,
non-discrimination and mutual assistance" and expressed the belief that
"all parties involved, particularly the Russian Federation and the European
Union would dramatically benefit from it". Mr Papoutsis emphasised the
importance attached by the European Union to an early ratification of the
Treaty, so that its implementation could start, and said that "without the
active participation of the Russian Federation the Energy Charter would be
a meaningless instrument".
