[02] Business and consumer surveys: modest investment growth expected

Industrial investment is expected to grow by 2% in volume in 1997 (4% in value), according to the October/November 1996 survey. In the meantime, 1996 investment growth was revised downwards, to 3% in volume (compared with 7% in the March/April 1996 survey). The economic sentiment indicator increased slowly; there were positive results on consumer confidence (which rose for the second time in three months) and signs of increased optimism in the retail trade. These encouraging developments were partly offset by weak results from the industry sector (confidence declined slightly following a continuous improvement over the last seven months).

[03] Commission authorizes the acquisition by Rheinbraun Brennstoff GmbH and SHV Energy NV of joint control of the hard coal trading activities of Stinnes AG

The European Commission has cleared the acquisition of a 50% interest each in the hard coal trading activities of the German Stinnes AG by the German Rheinbraun Brennstoff GmbH, Köln, and the Dutch SHV Energy NV, Utrecht. The investigation carried out has shown that the joint venture will not give any power to the parties to increase prices or to evade the rules of competition under the ECSC Treaty.

    [04] Sport against racism

Social Affairs Commissioner Padraig Flynn met yesterday with Mr Roger Rogge, President of the European Olympic Committee, and Mr Bengt Sevelius, President of the European Non-Governmental Sport Organisations, to discuss cooperation regarding the 1997 European Year against Racism. It was agreed that the European Year will be featured during the European Youth Olympic Days (for example, a declaration will be put out at the opening ceremonies) which will take place in Sweden on 9 February (Winter) and in Lisbon on 17 July (Summer). It was also agreed that the network of 585,000 sports clubs throughout Europe will be alerted and encouraged to participate in the European Year.
