[I] Résultats de la Commission de ce jour -
Outcome of today's Commission meeting
[01] Guaranteeing affordable access to telephone services in a liberalised
environment
The basic telephone service should provide a normal telephone line, directories
and directory enquiry services, public pay-telephones and, where appropriate,
special services for disabled users and other special social groups at affordable
prices. This is the definition of universal service for voice telephony proposed
today by the Commission, at the initiative of Telecommunications Commissioner
Martin Bangemann, in association with Competition Commissioner Karel Van
Miert, in a draft Directive put forward to the European Parliament and the
Council.
