  • [01] Information seminar on BSE

The European Commission will hold an information seminar for third countries on BSE on Monday 10 June in Brussels, which will be opened by the Commissioner of Agriculture and Rural Development, Mr Franz Fischler. Representatives from 68 countries outside of the EU have been invited and most have already indicated that they will attend. The purpose of the Seminar is to inform the governments about the BSE situation and in particular measures taken to ensure the protection of human and animal health and to convince third countries that there is no basis for any restriction on EU beef or dairy exports, apart from the measures already taken.

[02] Female entrepreneurship at the centre of the Europartenariat in Lulea

Several hundred small and medium sized enterprises (SME) from the Scandinavian countries will meet SME's from other countries of the European Union and EFTA as well as from Central and Eastern Europe, the Mediterranean region and North America in this year's Europartenariat, which will take place in Lulea (Sweden) on 13 and 14 June. Its aim is to allow companies to explore possibilities for partnerships and joint ventures as well as cooperation agreements. Although it is the 14th edition of this event, it is the first to take place in Scandinavia and the first to give special attention to female entrepreneurship, as within the framework of it a special seminar will be held on "Women entrepreneurs - significant potential for regional sustainable development".

[04] Mario Monti: Future developments in the use of fiscal instruments for environmental policy

Addressing the conference organized by the Italian Presidency on "Incentives and Disincentives for Environmental Protection", Internal Market Commissioner Mario Monti recognised that economic instruments, notably environmental taxes, can be a powerful way to internalise external costs arising from pollution. However, we need to ensure that national measures comply with Single Market rules and that they are included in a coherent policy framework at Community level. While not underestimating the limitations imposed on Community action by the requirement of unanimity, Mr Monti said: "I am conscious of the need to promote fiscal measures in order to remedy environmental problems. I will take further initiatives in the future to amend existing measures and to create new fiscal structures at Community level which are more deliberately oriented towards the achievement of environmental goals".
