LONDON - Prime Minister John Major on Wednesday said he would not "play
partisan politics" by ruling out British membership of a single European
currency, saying he had to put the interests of country ahead of party.

VALLETTA - Arab countries intend to separate Middle East peace problems from
the work of a European and south Mediterranean foreign ministers' meeting in
Malta this month, Dutch foreign minister Hans van Mierlo said on Wednesday.

BRUSSELS - Companies selling gene-modified organisms such as maize, soybeans
and other crops in the European Union will soon have to label their products,
according to European Commission proposals adopted on Wednesday.

trade war with the United States over meat imports, at least for the moment,

probe into Siemens's proposed acquisition of a stake in Huelsbeck & Fuerst

BRUSSELS - The European Commission said on Wednesday it was starting a routine
probe into a proposed joint venture between the Coca-Cola Company and
Carlsberg A/S of Denmark.

BRUSSELS - The European Commission said on Wednesday that Credit Lyonnais's
buy back of Societe de Banque Occidentale did not involve any state subsidies.

MADRID - Spain criticised the European Commission's proposal for sweeping
reforms of the olive oil industry on Wednesday and will seek support from
other countries to block the plan.

ANKARA - Turkey said on Wednesday it would be willing in principle to accept
EU-inspired outside mediation in its many disputes with neighbour Greece.

TUNIS - The European Investment Bank has granted Tunisia two loans totalling
40 million ecus to finance private sector firms and work on a railway, the
European Commission said on Wednesday.

probe into plans by Deutsche Bank AG and Commerzbank AG to take joint control
of JM Voith Holding AG.
